History:
The first 10 Dollar Polymer note of the current design was released in 1993. Originally, the main (intaglio) print was based on a distinct dark blue. An undesirable side effect of the ink used to print the notes was a tendency to “self soil” when notes were stored and coming into contact with each other. This is clearly apparent by the presence of a mirror-reverse “10” transfer at the far left on the face of the notes. In an effort to rectify the problem, Note Printing Australia experimented with the ink used, and up to five different shades of blue have been observed with 1993 and ’94 issues. By 1998, NPA had changed the dark blue main print of the 10 Dollar note to a much lighter blue. In addition, Dobell’s portrait of Mary Gilmore (next to her younger image) had become steel grey.
