As this was prior to Commonwealth coinage & banknotes.
There 2 sources of disposable currency, these being Gold at the seat of and backed by gold reserves held by The Chancellor of the Excequer.A guarantee of payment.
The other option were Pre Federation banknotes, issued and underwritten by banks of time- 1823-1911. There was no gaurantee of payment, as all banks were underwritten by incoming funds. A wonderful “Ponsi Scheme” of the 19th Century.
Most banks “fell over” with very few surviving.
